De rode panda (ook wel kleine panda genoemd) is een roofdier. Ze heten zo omdat ze rood zijn en beetje lijken op de gewone panda.
Rode panda's hebben een rode vacht, maar hun wangen, oren en snuit zijn wit. Ze hebben een geringde staart. Rode panda's worden zo'n 50 à 60 centimeter lang. Ze wegen 3 tot 6 kilo.

In tegenstelling tot de panda, is de rode panda veel te vinden in dierentuinen. In deze dierentuinen fokken ze de rode panda's, zodat ze niet uitsterven. De dierentuin van Rotterdam (Diergaarde Blijdorp) is de wereldwijde leider van het fokken van rode panda's.
Vroeger dacht men dat de rode panda familie van de beren of de wasberen was. Dat is niet zo gek, rode panda's lijken heel erg op wasberen. Wetenschappers hebben dit onderzocht en ze kwamen erachter dat de rode panda een familie op zichzelf is. Wie zijn de familieleden dan? Die zijn allemaal al uitgestorven. Een bijzonder diertje dus!
